Description

An original and official match-worn Manchester City shirt worn by David White during the 1986/87 First Division season. This iconic shirt was also worn by Paul Lake on his Manchester City first-team debut away to Wimbledon, adding even greater significance to one of the club’s most memorable kit designs.

The famous Umbro black and red “chessboard” shirt remains one of the most distinctive and talked-about Manchester City shirts ever produced. When it was launched, Umbro broke away from traditional football shirt designs with a bold 1980s look that divided opinion then—and still does today. Whether loved or loathed, it has become one of the club’s most iconic and collectible shirts.

This style was worn in just 11 first-team matches during the 1986/87 season, including fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Coventry City, Wimbledon, Queens Park Rangers, Leicester City, Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, Everton, Southend United in the League Cup, and the final-day trip to West Ham United.

Although the season ended in the disappointment of relegation, the shirt has gone on to achieve legendary status among collectors. Its striking large white Philips sponsor stood out brilliantly against the black and red design, while the following season saw the introduction of the Brother sponsor and white shoulder piping.

It is widely believed that only a single first-team set of these shirts was produced, making genuine match-worn examples exceptionally scarce. As a result, both original match-worn shirts and replica versions are now among the most sought-after Manchester City shirts ever made.

Every shirt featured on this website is an original match-worn or match-issued example. These shirts are among the hardest Manchester City memorabilia pieces to obtain and form part of Mark’s world-renowned collection of Manchester City match-worn shirts.

Each shirt purchased comes complete with a personally signed Letter of Provenance from Mark, confirming its authenticity and origin, giving buyers complete confidence in the history and provenance of their shirt.

Whether you’re a dedicated Manchester City supporter, a serious football memorabilia collector, or searching for a true centrepiece for your collection, this represents a rare opportunity to own one of the most iconic and elusive Manchester City match-worn shirts ever produced.
