Description

A fantastic and increasingly difficult-to-find piece of original Manchester City memorabilia from Wembley 1999.

This is an original Manchester City supporters’ flag purchased outside the old Wembley Stadium on 30th May 1999, ahead of City’s unforgettable Division Two Play-Off Final against Gillingham.

This isn’t a modern reproduction or a piece of memorabilia produced years later to commemorate the occasion. It is a genuine supporters’ item from the day itself, bought amongst the thousands of Blues who descended on Wembley for what would become one of the most important matches in Manchester City’s history.

Now 27 years old, the flag represents a wonderful piece of surviving memorabilia from an afternoon that changed the direction of the football club.

City appeared destined to spend another season in the third tier when Gillingham led 2–0 with only minutes remaining. Kevin Horlock gave City hope before Paul Dickov’s extraordinary stoppage-time equaliser sent the City end into absolute bedlam.

After extra time, Nicky Weaver’s penalty shoot-out heroics completed the comeback and sparked those unforgettable Wembley celebrations.

For many supporters, Wembley 99 was the day Manchester City began the journey back.

Original supporters’ items from that afternoon have become increasingly difficult to find. Flags, scarves and other pieces bought around the old Wembley Stadium were never intended to become valuable collectibles – they were simply part of being there – and that is exactly what makes surviving examples like this so special today.

For anyone who attended that unforgettable afternoon, this is pure nostalgia. For the serious Manchester City collector, it is an opportunity to own an original piece of Wembley 99 history that was actually there on the day.

A fantastic item for displaying in any City room, office, man cave or dedicated Wembley 99 collection.
