Saturday, 11th May 1985 will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Manchester City supporters. On a glorious afternoon at a packed Maine Road, City secured promotion back to the First Division after a two-year absence with a magnificent 5–1 victory over Charlton Athletic. For the thousands of supporters inside the ground, it remains one of those unforgettable “I was there” moments in the club’s history.

This listing includes the official matchday programme from that memorable fixture, together with the original match ticket, creating a wonderful and increasingly rare collection from one of Manchester City’s most significant promotion-winning matches.

The day was, however, overshadowed by the tragic Bradford City stadium fire, in which 56 supporters lost their lives. While Manchester City fans celebrated promotion, the football world was united in mourning one of the darkest days in the sport’s history, making this a poignant reminder of a very different era of football.

The match is also remembered by many City supporters for the controversy surrounding the official attendance and gate receipts, with long-standing debate over the figures announced by then chairman Peter Swales compared with the number of supporters packed inside Maine Road that afternoon.

Rich in history and nostalgia, this programme and ticket combination is a superb piece of Manchester City memorabilia and an increasingly difficult set to find complete. Whether you’re a lifelong City supporter or a serious football memorabilia collector, it is a wonderful keepsake from one of the club’s most memorable days.
