A wholehearted, all-action striker, Royle became a firm favourite with the Maine Road faithful following his arrival in 1974. His strength, commitment and eye for goal made him a constant threat to opposition defences, and he played a pivotal role in one of the most memorable seasons in the club’s history.

During Manchester City’s successful 1975/76 League Cup-winning campaign, Royle scored in every round of the competition except the Final. He also had what many supporters still regard as a perfectly good goal wrongly ruled out at Wembley, before City famously went on to defeat Newcastle United 2-1 thanks to Dennis Tueart’s spectacular overhead kick. Royle’s goals throughout the competition were instrumental in City’s triumph and remain an important part of the club’s history.

His love affair with Manchester City continued long after his playing career ended. Returning as manager in 1998, Royle transformed the club’s fortunes, guiding City to back-to-back promotions and restoring them to the Premier League after a four-year absence. His leadership helped lay the foundations for the club’s modern revival and further cemented his place among Manchester City’s greatest servants.
