Description
A quite remarkable piece of Manchester City memorabilia from one of the most important days in the club’s history.
This is an original Manchester City supporters’ T-shirt produced in 1999 for the Division Two Play-Off Final against Gillingham at Wembley Stadium, an afternoon that has become one of the defining moments in City’s history.
Making this particular shirt incredibly special, the back features around 20 personally obtained signatures from members of the Manchester City squad and backroom team from that unforgettable 1998/99 season.
Among the signatures are manager Joe Royle, captain Andy Morrison, Shaun Goater, Ian Bishop and legendary kit man Les Chapman, alongside a number of players who were part of the wider squad during City’s one and only season in the third tier of English football.
There are also signatures from some of the less commonly seen names from that campaign, including Andy Bailey, Stephen Rimmer and Jim Whitley, adding another level of collectability to what is already a hugely nostalgic item.
This isn’t simply a modern reproduction celebrating Wembley 99 – it is an original supporters’ T-shirt from 1999, produced for that historic Wembley Play-Off Final and subsequently covered with signatures from the players and characters who were actually part of that remarkable season.
And what a season it was.
On 30th May 1999, City appeared destined for another year in the third tier when Gillingham led 2–0 with only minutes remaining. Kevin Horlock pulled one back before Paul Dickov’s legendary stoppage-time equaliser sent the City end into absolute bedlam.
After extra time, Nicky Weaver’s penalty shoot-out heroics completed one of the most dramatic victories Wembley has ever witnessed.
For many supporters, Wembley 99 was the day Manchester City began the journey back.
From the depths of the third tier came back-to-back promotions, a return to the Premier League and ultimately the Manchester City we know today. That is why original memorabilia connected to this particular season and fixture holds such a special place in the hearts of Blues.
The inclusion of signatures from not only the famous names but also fringe squad members and backroom staff makes this an especially fascinating snapshot of the people who contributed to that historic campaign.
The T-shirt is approximately XL in size and is a genuine period item from 1999.
It will be supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity and provenance, providing confidence in the history of this unique collection of signatures.
For anyone who stood on those Wembley terraces that afternoon – or any serious collector of Manchester City history – this is an exceptional opportunity to own an original piece of Wembley 99 memorabilia signed by around 20 members of the team, squad and staff from that unforgettable season.
Wembley 99. Horlock. Dickov. Weaver. The day Manchester City began the journey back.
