Description
A wonderful and increasingly rare piece of Manchester City memorabilia, this original matchday programme from 28th April 1981 was personally signed in biro by former City defender Tommy Caton.
The signature was obtained after the fixture and given to a young City supporter on the day. Long before organised signing sessions and today’s autograph industry, players would regularly stop and sign for supporters in ordinary biro, giving pieces such as this a wonderful authenticity and connection to a very different era of football.
Tommy Caton was one of Manchester City’s outstanding young players of the period. Making his first-team debut while still a teenager, the commanding centre-half went on to make almost 200 appearances for City before eventually moving to Arsenal. Despite his young age, Caton’s assured and powerful performances established him as a hugely popular figure with the Maine Road faithful.
Tragically, Tommy passed away in 1993 at just 30 years of age, making genuine examples of his signature increasingly difficult to obtain. His contribution to Manchester City, from his development through the youth ranks to becoming an established first-team defender, continues to be remembered with great affection.
The provenance of this particular programme makes it even more special. It was personally sourced by Mark directly from the City supporter who obtained Tommy’s signature on the day, providing a clear history stretching back more than four decades.
A fantastic opportunity to own an original Tommy Caton autograph with excellent provenance and a wonderful addition to any Manchester City memorabilia or football autograph collection.
